Spirit Island, a favorite
painting spot!
On the banks of the historic Athabasca River and right across from the imposing Mt. Tekarra is the studio setting for our annual Jasper Workshops. Away from the bustle and noise of town, it is blessed by seclusion and space, comfort and atmosphere---surely an ideal spot for serious artists or those just wanting a painting holiday.

Now in our 17th consecutive year of offering a challenging and refreshing combination of an indoor and outdoor workshops at the Tekarra Lodge in Jasper, Alberta, we provide an opportunity for artists to hone their skills in a resort setting, with professional instruction and criticism. We introduce artists to selected mountain sites and secluded locations where they can paint in peace and comfort every afternoon.

In the fall workshops we include the unique opportunity to paint for a full afternoon at the world renowned "Spirit Island," located a spectacular 45 minute boat ride away, on the magnificent Maligne Lake. And you can never run out of new or different places and things to paint and enjoy---all in beautiful Jasper. Why not take a break and join us this year? You won't be sorry!

See the details below for the when, what, where, and how to register for one of our workshops!

Workshop Details
Workshop Dates

We hold four 5-day workshops each year, 2 spring and 2 autumn. The dates for each of this year's workshops are:
  • May 30 - Jun. 3, 2011
  • Jun. 6 - 10, 2011 (if enrollment necessitates)
  • Sept. 19 - 23, 2011
  • Sept. 26 - Sept. 20, 2011
Each season in the mountains (and therefore each workshop) has its unique appeal. In spring the days are long, the mountains are still topped with winter snow, while the valleys are verdant with the fresh explosion of green.

In Autumn the brilliant colors are some of the finest on the continent, and the days are still warm, albeit shorter.

Both seasons are virtually insect-free, but alive with wildlife of every description. Surely an artist's paradise in every sense of the word.
Workshop Format

I try not to duplicate what is already out there, but rather provide something a little different -- the emphasis on outdoor painting in a resort setting in the off season at affordable prices. And we design the format to accommodate both professional and novice artists alike.

The daily sessions begin on Monday morning and run from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM daily, with time off for lunch, of course. Demonstrations, exercises, problem solving, critiques, take place in the morning, and location painting at a variety of sites takes place in the afternoon.

The evenings include slides, hikes and more demonstrations, as well as time off for socializing or shopping in town, a short 3/4 mile away.

Overall, the format is designed to be instructive and enjoyable within a pleasant, social, outdoor environment.
Supplies Required

  • tube-type paints, large palette, large brushes, sponge, and a good desk lamp

  • backing plywood or coroplast for quarter and half-size sheets of w/c paper

  • half and full-size sheets of quality w/c paper, either 140 lb or heavier

  • gear for outdoor painting: warm clothing, sunglasses, lawn chair, cushion, stool, water container, sketchbook, pencils, easel, masking tape, camera
Odds & Ends

The week's activities begin with  the hospitality hour on the Sunday night prior to the actual workshop, about 7:30 PM in the hospitality suite above the dining room, at which time we welcome everyone and lay out plans for the week. Most people have checked in by then.

Following that hour, we set up the studio and prepare for an early start on Monday morning, when we get started in earnest at 8:30 sharp.

Coffee and home-baked goodies will be available daily, provided by my wife, Darlene.
